The Ranch
ORIGIN OF STYLE
- Originated in California in the 1930’s
- Commonly referred to as the “California Ranch”
- One of the most popular American styles during the 1950’s & 1960’s
COMMON FEATURES
- Can be easily identified by it’s one story structure
- Box, L or U shaped layout
- Simple floor plans
- Typically has built in/attached garage
- Sliding glass doors leading to back patio
HISTORY
In the 1950’s & 60’s the automobile began to replace older forms of transportation such as buses and streetcars creating a more mobile homebuyer. Homebuyers were then able to move to the suburbs, where they purchased larger lots and built larger homes. With more more land, rather than building up, homeowners built out.
